So we’re almost a month into the New Year and you haven’t yet completed that resolution on your list of finding a new job. Or your current position now has you handling unrealistic tasks and it’s time to go in a new direction. What are some general tips to land your dream job in 2016? Here at Two Way Resume, we’re all about marketing you! Today, we’d like to walk you through 4 tips on landing that new position:
Tidy Up That Portfolio
1. It’s time to brush up that portfolio! Yes, we know it’s a lot of work and can be a daunting task but it needs to be done. Remember that article you wrote while you were in college? Or that logo you created in Photoshop CS3? It’s outdated! With your portfolio, less is more. Pick the best of the best and run with it. Typically an employer skimming over your resume website is not going to click on all 25 of your portfolio pieces. They may pick a few scattered amongst the site so you need to ensure that every item is up to your standards.
Computer Skills Are Key
2. Computer skills are a must! There are not many jobs out there where you can slide by without using a computer on at least a weekly business. Whether you’re a graphic designer, an accountant, a musician, or a lawyer, you probably use a computer. Make sure your skillset in this area is evident on your resume and ensure you are brushing up on your skills to further your development. Working quickly and efficiently on computers will surely increase your productivity and allow you to slide into some opportunities you may not otherwise be qualified for.
Mingle & Connect
3. Make connections! It’s not always about what you know but who you know. Ever heard that line? I’ve found it to be more true than ever as of late. As more young professionals are entering into the working world with powerful degrees, it has increased competition for entry level jobs. Making connections can be the difference between your dream job and being passed over by a hiring manager. Connections can be made both in person and electronically through the likes of LinkedIn and social media.
The Personal Website
4. Make sure you have a personal website! Of course we were going to throw this one in but it couldn’t be more true. Many employers EXPECT you to have a personal website in this day and age. Applications will request a website where they can learn more about you, your experience, and who you are outside of work. Don’t procrastinate until you are asked for this, be proactive and have your own personal website in your back pocket whenever it is called upon.
We hope your 2016 is off to a great start and you have big plans ahead. We know we do! If you haven’t already jump on board Two Way Resume and create your own personal website complete with resume and portfolio. Get started for free, no credit card required.
